Some Easy Steps To Clean Garbage Disposal

Remove the lodged objects on your own

Before you start with the clean garbage disposal, you have to make sure that no big objects are trapped in your garbage disposal. Turn off the power to be safe. You don’t want the grinder to start working when your hands are still trapped in. If needed, you will have to use pliers or tongs to get them out.

Bring ice cubes and salt to your use

If you grind ice cubes and salt in the garbage disposal, it would help in removing sludge and debris tightly trapped inside. You can pour at least two cups of ice into it and about one big cup of salt. While the ice is crushing because of the blades, run cold water over it.

Scrub using an old brush

Using a scrub brush or an old toothbrush, try to remove all the dirt off the disposal. If you are able to remove the screen from the top of the drain, it would result in more effective cleaning.

Use citrus fruit peels to eliminate odorsclean garbage disposal

If you want to get rid of the lingering smells and want your kitchen to smell fresh, grind citrus fruit peels in it. For example peels of orange, lemon or grapefruit. Citrus acid helps in elimination of odors. You can add spice and fragrant oil to give a better scent.

A mixture of baking soda and vinegar

If the above method doesn’t help well or you don’t have the peels, you can sprinkle around the half cup of baking soda on the grinder and then add a cup of vinegar. You will notice bubble forming. Let the mixture sit for a while (at least 5 minutes) and then rinse it all using boiling water.

Use bleach

Bleach is known to kill off germs. Although, you shouldn’t use too much of it as it can harden any grease which remains on the grinder. For this, you need to dilute one tablespoon of bleach with one gallon of water and then pour it into the disposal. Run hot water over it again after letting it sit for 5 minutes.

Borax could be used as well

Borax is a natural cleaning product and it removes odors as well. You just have to pour about 3 to 4 tablespoons of Borax into the disposal and let it sit there for approx. an hour. Next, you rinse it with boiling water and the garbage disposal would be clean.
